Residents at a Broadacres supported housing scheme for the homeless young people received a nice treat thanks to customers at a local building society.
Following the success of a collection for Broadacres’ women’s refuge last year, the Yorkshire Building Society in Northallerton turned its attention to helping people living at our supported housing scheme known as The Crossing.
This was after staff were surprised to learn that items such as Coca Cola, Dairy Milk chocolate and Lynx deodorant are considered luxuries among the young people who live at The Crossing, which is situated near Northallerton Railway Station.
This is because those receiving support at The Crossing receive very little money and therefore need to make every penny count.
So, the Yorkshire Building Society asked its customers for donations and staff at The Crossing visited the branch recently to pick up the first batch of bags. More have since been delivered.
Branch Manager Lisa Forster said: “When our customers heard there was a homeless service in Northallerton they were very surprised as it’s not something you expect in a North Yorkshire market town like this.
“However, homelessness can affect anyone, regardless of where they live, so once they knew why we were collecting, they were only too glad to support us.
“This is the second Broadacres project we have supported in the past few months and we have been very happy to help.”
Stephen O’Brien, Scheme Manager at The Crossing, said: “It may not seem like much, but well-known branded drinks, chocolates and toiletries are really coveted among the young people at The Crossing because they are not something they can generally afford to buy.
“We would like to thank Yorkshire Building Society and their customers for their kindness. Donations like this are always welcome.”
