The Colburn Hub & Community Café, a community facility set up to help lonely and isolated people, is the latest beneficiary of a grant from Broadacres’ Community Development Fund.
A grant of £348 was used to buy a fridge freezer and a chest freezer which are used to store food in the café, which is situated in Colburn Village Hall. The café opens two days a week – on Tuesdays and Thursdays – serving a two-course meal and a drink for only £4.50.
Angie Dale and Helen Grant, who run the café, said: “The community café was previously funded by the Richmondshire Community Voluntary Action but after it folded in 2017, we had to look for alternative funding to keep it going.
“We set up a standalone, not-for-profit community interest company which aims to combat isolation and loneliness in a fast-growing community.
“Thanks to donations like this from Broadacres, which we are very grateful for, the café has gone from strength to strength.
“We ensure that when people come for a meal, either by themselves, as couples or friends, that everyone speaks and interacts with each other and it has led to many new friendships.”
Two of those who attend the café are Erwin and Pam Klapprot, both aged 79, who live in Catterick Village.
They said: “We enjoy coming here; it gets us out of the house and we enjoy meeting and speaking to new people.”
Emily Thomas, Broadacres’ Community Involvement Manager, said: “This is a fantastic example of a local project which is doing amazing work helping the local community.
“We are delighted to have been able to provide a grant to support the café; it’s clearly become a real hub for the community.”
Broadacres’ Community Development Fund provides grants totalling £12,000 each year (up to £500 per project), with all applications and awards being determined by a panel of Broadacres’ customers.
Applications for funding in 2018/19 will be accepted from April this year and more information about the process, including an application form, is available from: https://dev.broadacres.globalizeme-dublin2.co.uk/customer-area/getting-involved/community-development-fund/
