TWO residents who are part of a housing association panel which awards grants to local not-for-profit organisations have seen how some of the money is spent, after visiting the headquarters of the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team.
A grant of £500 from Broadacres’ Community Development Fund was used towards the purchase of a trailer which helps the Team to transport its water rescue equipment across the 1,000 square metres it covers across the region.
Two of the people who sit on the residents’ panel which agreed the grant – Rosemary Colebrook and Bob Cook – were invited to the Team’s headquarters in Great Ayton to see the trailer and the new garage which also previously received £500 funding.
They declared it money well spent after hearing how the trailer has been used in some of the 57 incidents the Team have dealt with up until the end of July 2018.
Rosemary said: “Each year we provide grants totalling £12,000 to assist community-based, not-for-profit projects in areas where Broadacres has homes.
“When we discussed the application from the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team we were unanimous in approving it because they do so such an amazing job, often under the most dangerous conditions.
“It was nice to be able to see how the money was spent and to know the trailer has already played its part in helping to save lives.”
Mike Gallagher, Team Leader of the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team, said: “Cleveland Mountain Rescue Service is entirely reliant on grants like this to enable us to provide our services across a wide geographical area.
“Having the trailer means we can respond more quickly to water incidents and move our equipment, especially the rafts, more easily and safely during an incident.
“Broadacres have been fantastic supporters of the Team over the years and we would like to thank them for their latest grant.”
Broadacres is now accepting applications for the 2018/19 funding year. For more information on the process visit www.broadacres.org.uk/customer-area/getting-involved/community-development-fund.
