women's refugeKind donations from the public have brought some Christmas cheer to mums and children living in Broadcres’ women’s refuge.

The refuge has been inundated with gifts that were given to the children on Christmas Day.

Some of the gifts, which included toys and board games, were sent already wrapped with messages such as ‘for a boy aged 3’ on them, while others were wrapped by the mums and staff before the 25th.

Michaela Thomas, Refuge Co-ordinator, said: “We never cease to be amazed by the generosity of local people and this year is no different.

“Many of the families living with us will have left their homes in a rush without being able to bring personal belongings and with no access to money.

“To make Christmas Day feel as normal and special as possible, the children will think the presents have come from their mums, just as they would have when they are at home.”

Another person making a donation this year is new Broadacres apprentice Edward Kerridge. On the course he is attending as part of his joinery apprenticeship, he was asked to make a bird table and he has now donated that to the refuge.

Edward, 17, from Thirsk, said: “I am pleased that the table has gone to the refuge and I hope the families enjoying looking at the birds it will attract.”
