The 2337 (Northallerton) Air Cadets are the latest beneficiary of a grant from Broadacres’ Community Development Fund.

A grant of £500 was used to put towards the purchase of two laptops, which are now being used by the cadets to study for various exams in subjects such as engineering, aircraft recognition and principles of flight.

The laptops enable the young people to work individually in a quiet room, which is important when they are completing different stages of their learning. They can also be used by lecturers for group learning.

Flight Lieutenant Philip Perry, Officer Commanding, said: “Like all organisations we are reliant on fundraising, so £500 is a significant amount of money for us and we would like to thank Broadacres for their generous support.

“Young people get lots of negative publicity but the cadets are making a positive contribution to society through their hard work, dedication and honesty.”

One of the Broadacres residents who is a member of the panel which determines the Community Development Fund grants is Bob Cook.

A former military man himself, Bob visited the cadets to see how they use the laptops.

He said: “I was very impressed with the cadets; it is clear they are a special group of young people who will go a long way in life and I am glad we have been able to help them by providing funding.”

Broadacres’ Community Development Fund provides grants totalling £12,000 each year (up to £500 per project), with all applications and awards being determined by a panel of Broadacres’ customers.

Applications for funding in 2018/19 will be accepted from April this year and more information about the process, including an application form, is available from: https://dev.broadacres.globalizeme-dublin2.co.uk/customer-area/getting-involved/community-development-fund/
