Jordan has Grand Designs

Jordan Collings certainly has an eye for design – as his 7,000 Instagram followers and readers of a national magazine can testify to.

The 24-year-old was approached by House Beautiful magazine after he started documenting the work, via Instagram, he had done to design and decorate his Broadacres home in Northallerton.

Despite only moving in with his partner Max in February last year, the self-described ‘interior obsessive’ has put his unique stamp on the two-bedroom house, attracting a cult following in the process.

Surprisingly, despite his obvious talent, he doesn’t even want to be an interior designer when he leaves university, instead targeting a career as a Physician Associate.

Jordan explains: “I have always enjoyed interior design as a hobby, so when we moved into our first home together I couldn’t wait to start work.

“I would take photographs of each room as I completed it and started putting these on Instagram and before I knew it, my followers had increased and people were leaving really nice comments about what I had done.

“That spiralled and before I knew it I was approached by House Beautiful to see if they could photograph the house and do an interview.

“They were here all day and it was a really interesting experience.”

Jordan describes his style as industrial-meets-Scandi. He likes clean lines and blocks of colour – white and grey being his favourite – with plants to add contrast. Despite having little DIY experience, he has created something that wouldn’t look out of place in a film star’s home – the ones with good tastes of course!

He adds: “Broadacres have been great. I always check with them when I want to do something and I think they see the pride I have in our home, which is not a bad thing.”

Jordan also contributes to an interior design and style website/blog – www.style-squeeze.com – which is about decorating and styling in small spaces.

And as to the million-dollar question: why is Jordan not pursuing a career as an interior designer, given how much attention he has had. That’s simple.

He says: “To me interior design is a hobby. When it becomes your day job that’s something completely different and I don’t think I would enjoy that as much.

“I am studying for a degree in science and I want to become a Physician Associate, supporting doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients. That’s the dream and it still means I can carry on being an interior obsessive!”
