Broadacres is running a series of workshops across North Yorkshire designed to prevent local people from becoming the victims of a scam.

The workshops, which have been organised by the Broadacres’ Money Advice Team in partnership with Natwest Bank, begin this week with sessions at the Association’s Rockliffe Court sheltered housing scheme in Hurworth (20th Nov at 2pm), Lascelles Court, Northallerton (also 20th Nov at 10.30am) and its Kirkwood Hall extra care scheme in Leyburn (22nd Nov at 2pm).

The workshops, which are open to the community, aim to raise awareness about the different types of scams, how to recognise a scam and how to keep your information and money safe and secure.

They will cover postal scams, telephone scams, online scams and doorstep scams.

Following the first three workshops, Broadacres will be running a further session at The Orchards extra care scheme in Brompton at 1.30pm on Wednesday 16th January 2019. The Association is also planning events at Town Close, Stokesley, Rivendale, Northallerton, Gillings Court, Thirsk, Kirk House, Northallerton and at Broadacres’ head office in Northallerton.

Broadacres’ Money Advisor Janet Meikle said: “There’s a common misconception that it’s only the old and vulnerable who are the victims of scams.

“Whilst scammers inevitably do try to target people they consider to be easy prey, in reality any one of us could become a target at any time, so through the workshops we want to get this message across and try to ensure that people’s money remains in their pockets and bank accounts, and not handed over to the scammers.”
